diy curtains + a dining room rug

Two things happened in our dining room: 1.) we found a rug, and 2.) I made some curtains and they only cost me $6.

On Friday, I mentioned that we had an awesome shopping trip at Marshall's one night, and found this basket for the entry.
Well, on that same shopping trip - I happened across a jute rug that I knew was just perfect for the dining room.  On our house-iversary, I mentioned that we were going to "keep our eyes peeled for a great rug for this space", and I couldn't believe how quickly it happened!
When we had talked about getting a rug for this space, we knew we wanted something relatively neutral, and something modern - but not super trendy.  So this rug fit those needs perfectly.  It brings some great texture to the space, as well as a beautiful color, and the pattern is modern, but not overwhelming.  I feel confident that we will love this rug for a very long time.

Another amazing shopping trip happened after Christmas at Target.  We were looking at the clearance items and found this table cloth on clearance.  We loved the colors and pattern, and were sold by the price tag on this "Christmas" tablecloth.
I sewed them up using this tutorial, and got them hung with a $15 bronze curtain rod from Lowe's.
With both the rug and the curtains, this room is really coming along.
Note: It's recommended that a dining room rug be large enough so that chairs do not "fall off" when they are pulled out from the table.  However, since this room is also the main walkway from one half of the house to the other, we opted to get this 5x7 rug to define the space of the dining room, and it hasn't been an issue at all.
We're moving along nicely with this checklist as well; just need to work on the art in here (goodbye Ikea picture!) and we may makeover/upgrade the light fixture.

  • Finish New Floors - we started these a few weeks ago, and haven't posted about it yet
  • Update Baseboards/add quarter round
  • Add Curtains (remove valance)
  • Switch out/get new Artwork for this space
  • Possibly update the light fixture
  • Keep our eyes peeled for a great rug for this space
