diy vintage-style sign - technique 1

For our wedding, I made a few vintage signs for our programs table, and guest book table.
I just grabbed a scrap piece of lumber from a whole bin-ful at my folk's house, and painted it black, and printed out my word on my plain old computer printer.
Then, I took a pencil, and shaded on the back of the letters.
Unfortunately "programs" is too long, so it took two sheets, and I lined them up pretty closely and taped them to the board.  Then, traced the letters with a ballpoint pen, and pressed very hard.  Since I shaded the back of the letters with pencil, the pen left the outline directly on the board (this picture is actually from another project, but here is what it will look like).
I just painted in my letters with a very small brush.  A paint pen would make it easier, but I'm cheap and I already had white paint and a brush on hand.
I let the paint dry, and took sandpaper to that sucker and distressed that sign!  Some spots are whiter than others, and some have black showing through, and it is beautiful.
I actually added a layer of "mod-podge" to finish it off as well.  "Mod-podge" is 1 part water with 1 part elmers glue.  It does the trick, and it is so much cheaper than buying the real thing!

I also made a sign for the guest book table using another technique, that I will share tomorrow!

P.S. If you're curious about our programs, they were just a print-at-home kit we picked up at Michael's, and they were perfect for our wedding.
They have a cardstock back with purple and off-white lines and then 5 sheets with information (name/date page, ceremony order, bridal party, thank you and map to the reception).  This kit also comes with a link to download templates for easy printing.

Each pack of 25 programs was only $30 (and I had 40% off coupons, and bought our kits on two seperate occassions!), so we only spent $36 on programs! They were so easy to put together, and came out perfect!
